Vaginal Mesh

Vaginal Mesh

Vaginal mesh has been used to treat pelvic organ prolapse (POP), a condition in which a woman’s pelvic organs fall into or through her vaginal opening, and stress urinary incontinence (SUI) a condition marked by the involuntary leakage of urine. Thousands of women have suffered serious vaginal mesh complications following surgery to treat these conditions.

In 2008, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported complications with mesh implants. By 2011, the FDA issued a second warning on vaginal mesh products after thousands of women reported injuries after being implanted with mesh. The FDA announced that patients undergoing pelvic organ prolapse repair with surgery mesh may be at a greater risk for mesh complications than women pursuing other surgical treatments.
