Pradaxa & Blood Thinner Medication

Pradaxa & Blood Thinner Medication

Pradaxa is an anticoagulant, or blood-thinner, that is used to prevent systemic embolism and strokes in people who have atrial fibrillation. Pradaxa, which is manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim, was introduced to the market in 2010 and was the first drug to compete with warfarin, a type of blood thinner that has been popularly prescribed for decades. Although the two drugs achieve the same goal, until 2015, Pradaxa lacked an antidote or reversal agent to stop excessive bleeding events. The absence of an antidote resulted in thousands of adverse events and hundreds of fatalities from uncontrollable bleeding. In October 2015, the FDA granted accelerated approval to Praxbind, a drug which allows doctors to reverse the blood-thinning effects of Pradaxa in emergency situations.

By 2011, Pradaxa was associated with at least 3,781 injuries and 542 deaths in the U.S. alone. As a result, thousands of lawsuits were filed against Boehringer Ingelheim alleging various causes of action and damages. In 2014, Boehringer agreed to settle approximately 4,000 lawsuits for $650 million. Many patients, however, continue to suffer from the life-threatening side effects of Pradaxa, and Pradaxa lawsuits are still being filed against Boehringer.
