What is Valsartan?
Valsartan, a generic version of Diovan, is a medication that is used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure and is widely prescribed in the United States. In July of 2018, the FDA announced a recall of some batches of the medication that could be tainted with cancer-causing substances, such as, N-nitrosodimethylamine (“NDMA”) or N-Nitrosodiethylamine (“NDEA”). NDMA was formerly used in the production of rocket fuel, antioxidants, additives for lubricants, and softeners for copolymers.
Injuries and Allegations
Several drug companies have voluntarily recalled their blood pressure and heart medications that contain valsartan, after it became known that some products may be contaminated in the Chinese and India manufacturing plants in which it was produced.
Short term exposure to NDMA can cause damage to your liver, such as liver fibrosis or scarring. Long term exposure can increase the risk of liver, kidney, colorectal, stomach, and pancreatic cancer.
Symptoms of NDMA exposure include:
- Abdominal cramps
- Liver, kidney, and lung dysfunction
