Many people have purchased battery-powered heated socks from places like Amazon, assuming they’re safe and reliable. After all, no one expects that a simple purchase could lead to something as serious as second or third-degree burns. Unfortunately, heated socks have reportedly overheated or even exploded, severely burning users.

What Are Heated Socks?

Heated socks are battery-powered electric shocks designed to keep feet warm in cold weather. They have built-in heating elements that are powered by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. These batteries can provide warmth for several hours, and once they run out, they can easily be recharged for future use.

Heated socks come in different styles for different needs. Some are made from thick materials like wool, which are perfect for people who spend long hours outdoors in freezing temperatures, such as hunters, skiers, or hikers. Others are made from thinner fabrics like cotton and are commonly used around the house to improve circulation, relax stiff muscles, or prevent numbness in the toes during cooler weather.

How Do Heated Socks Work?

Heated socks use tiny, battery-powered heating elements to generate heat. These heating elements are made of thin, flexible wires that are knitted directly into the fabric of the sock and connected to a rechargeable battery pack.

Most heated socks are powered by a lithium-ion battery, which is ideal for small electronic devices like these socks. Lithium-ion batteries are lightweight, slim, and powerful, making them perfect for use in socks without adding bulk or weight. The battery pack is typically placed in a small pocket on the cuff of the sock, a few inches above the ankle, or in the mid-calf area.

While these batteries are praised for their energy efficiency and compact size, there have been ongoing concerns about their safety.

Are Heated Socks Safe?

Reports of heated sock explosions are becoming more common, and a major reason for this is the danger posed by the lithium-ion batteries that power them. When a lithium-ion battery overheats, it can enter a process known as thermal runaway

This occurs when the battery’s internal temperature rises uncontrollably, causing a chain reaction inside the battery itself. The chemicals inside the battery, many of which are highly flammable, react to the heat, and as a result, the battery temperature skyrockets.

The battery continues to heat up rapidly, often reaching temperatures over 1832ºF in a matter of seconds. The resulting explosions are abrupt, making it impossible for wearers to remove the socks from their bare skin in time. This overwhelming and rapid surge of heat has left users with horrific third-degree burns

Heated Socks Explosion Reports on the Rise

There have been several cases of heated socks burning and injuring unsuspecting consumers.

On December 12, 2024, Tyler Morris from Trimont, Minnesota, suffered second and third-degree burns when a rechargeable iHEAT heated insole he had purchased on Amazon exploded inside his boot. The insole was not turned on, but it still overheated and caused a sharp pain in Tyler’s right foot, followed by intense heat and white smoke coming from his boot.

Tyler quickly removed his boot, but half of his sock was already burned. He later learned he was the third person that week to be injured by similar incidents with the same type of insoles. Tyler was told he might need skin grafts.

Also, a case report released in December 2024, described a 43-year-old man who sustained a full-thickness burn on his left lower leg after wearing lithium-ion battery-powered heated socks while skiing for four hours. He was diagnosed with a partial-thickness burn and later developed a full-body rash, requiring a change in his medication. It took 15 weeks for the burn to fully heal, and the injury was serious enough that he needed surgery to remove dead skin and tissue.

Second and third-degree burns don’t just cause intense physical pain; they can also leave permanent scars, require long-term treatment, and render daily tasks nearly impossible. When the burns happen on your feet, the impact is even worse. Walking, standing, and performing basic activities like driving, working, or caring for your family can become overwhelming challenges.

Some Models of Heated Socks Recalled

In 2019, a recall was issued for a specific model of Mobile Warming Performance Heated Socks that were sold with lithium-ion batteries.

Tech Gear 5.7 recalled roughly 4,000 socks sold in Scheels and several other sporting goods stores after several reports of the batteries overheating, melting, or even igniting. In some cases, the overheating caused minor property damage, but thankfully, no injuries were reported.

In October 2024, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a warning for WOTOTIC and Ackpair heated socks with model number HS101 due to serious fire and burn risks. These 100% cotton socks, sold on Amazon, featuring a lithium-polymer battery and a temperature switch, have caused seven incidents, including four fires and three malfunctions, leading to second and third-degree burns.

Do I Qualify for a Heated Sock Lawsuit?

If you’ve been injured by defective heated socks, you may be entitled to significant compensation. Product liability laws allow victims of faulty products to pursue legal action. In the case of heated socks, defects such as battery malfunctions, overheating, or design flaws that cause burns or other injuries may make the manufacturer or seller liable for your damages.

While no one can predict the exact amount of compensation you might receive, many victims of defective products like heated socks are able to recover money for things like:
