What is Elmiron?
Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate sodium) is a drug approved by the FDA to treat interstitial cystitis — an ailment in the urinary tract that causes abdominal and pelvic pain. The pain can be chronic or intermittent and the condition can often lead to frequent urination. Interstitial cystitis is sometimes referred to as bladder pain syndrome and mostly affects women. Elmiron works by attaching itself to the wall of the bladder and providing a buffer between irritating substances and the bladder.
Recent studies have shown a strong association between Elmiron use and pigmentary maculopathy – a unique form of retinal eye disease which causes damage to the retina that can often be confused with age-related macular degeneration or pattern dystrophy. Some medical experts are now recommending that patients using Elmiron have an ophthalmic examination for early detection of maculopathy.
Symptoms of pigmentary maculopathy include the following:
- Blurry Vision
- Night Blindness
- Difficulty Reading
- Dark Spots
- Loss of Close Vision
- Visual Dimming
